Functional overview only. Input protection, filtering, PFC, isolation and control circuitry depend on the design.

APPLICATION OVERVIEW

Understand the circuit requirements.

An AC/DC supply contains several distinct selection problems. The input bridge rectifies the AC input; the converter and output stages have their own voltage, current, switching and thermal requirements.

Begin with the input range, output power and chosen topology. Bridge rectifier ratings and output rectifier characteristics should be evaluated in their respective circuit positions.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

The details behind component selection.

01

Reverse voltage

Review the voltage across each rectifier under normal operation and expected transients. Apply design margin to the relevant datasheet limit.

02

Current & inrush

Distinguish average rectified current from non-repetitive surge current. Check the waveform and conditions used for the IF(AV) and IFSM ratings.

03

Losses & temperature

Evaluate forward voltage at the operating current and temperature. Review the mounting conditions behind the thermal and current ratings.

04

The correct circuit position

Output rectifiers and primary-side switches require separate evaluation. A low-voltage MOSFET or Schottky rectifier is not an AC mains primary-side substitute.

COMPONENT SELECTION

A starting point for your design.

Use the bridge category to investigate input rectification, high-voltage MOSFETs for switching-stage requirements, and the rectifier categories for the relevant converter or output position. SiC and silicon diodes have different characteristics. Evaluate voltage stress, recovery, drive conditions and thermal performance for the chosen topology; the linked parts are examples for comparison.
